McTeague (aka Life's a Whirlpool) is a 1916 silent film drama, the first filming of Frank Norris's 1899 novel McTeague. The stars of the film were Holbrook Blinn and Fania Marinoff whose roles were played seven years later by Gibson Gowland and Zasu Pitts in Eric von Stroheim's notorious opus Greed, originally 9 hrs. Blinn was already famous for playing brutal characters on the stage such as in Salvation Nell, 1908. The 1916 film is listed as being directed by Barry O'Neil. The film is lost. [1] [2]
